Tobago’s New Chocolate Lab: A Sweet New Experience

Tobago is famous for its beautiful beaches, lush rainforest, vibrant culture and unforgettable food. Now, the island is adding something deliciously different to its story — chocolate.

The new Trinitario Chocolate Lab, located at the Tobago Hospitality and Tourism Institute (THTI) in Mt. St. George, is an exciting initiative designed to celebrate Trinidad and Tobago’s rich cocoa heritage while creating new opportunities in education, tourism and entrepreneurship.

From Tobago Cocoa to Chocolate

Trinidad and Tobago has a long and celebrated history of producing fine-flavour cocoa, particularly the famous Trinitario variety.

The Chocolate Lab takes that heritage a step further by providing a space where cocoa can be transformed into high-quality chocolate products while students develop valuable hands-on skills.

Through the initiative, THTI students can gain experience in chocolate making, recipe development and creating innovative cocoa-based products. These skills could eventually lead to new careers and small businesses producing everything from artisan chocolate bars and bonbons to desserts and uniquely Tobagonian chocolate creations.

A New Taste of Tobago Tourism

One of the most exciting possibilities is the Chocolate Lab’s connection to agritourism.

Visitors to Tobago already come for the beaches, Buccoo Reef, the rainforest, waterfalls, food and culture. Chocolate could become another authentic experience to add to that list.

Imagine learning about local cocoa, discovering how cocoa beans are transformed into chocolate and then tasting the finished product — all while learning about Trinidad and Tobago’s cocoa history.

Creating Chocolate with a Tobago Twist

There is also enormous potential for chocolatiers to combine fine chocolate with familiar Caribbean flavours.

Coconut, sorrel, ginger, nutmeg, citrus, tropical fruits and other local ingredients could inspire a new generation of distinctly Tobagonian chocolate products.

The possibilities extend beyond food. Locally produced chocolate can become part of Tobago’s tourism and souvenir industry, giving visitors another authentic product and experience to take home from the island.

More Than Just Chocolate

The Trinitario Chocolate Lab represents much more than satisfying a sweet tooth. It brings together agriculture, education, tourism, entrepreneurship and Tobago’s cultural heritage.

For students, it provides valuable skills. For entrepreneurs, it can inspire new businesses. For visitors, it introduces another fascinating side of Tobago.

Tobago has always offered visitors plenty to see, explore and taste.

Now there may be one more reason to fall in love with the island — Tobago chocolate.
